Projects

Light-Signal Systems for the Acceleration of Buses on Routes in Berlin (Germany)

Scope of Business: Transport Engineering
Focus: Planning of Traffic Lights and Operations Concepts
Client: Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe AöR (BVG)
Project Term: Since 2010
Project Location: Berlin

Project Description

The progress of the buses on routes M32, M77, 136 and 236 had to be accelerated. The modification of the light-signal systems (LSS) and their regulation is a significant component in achieving this.
Within the context of this project 39 junctions on the partially very busy main roads in the districts of Spandau and Tempelhof-Schöneberg were taken into consideration. Along a stretch of over 16 km the majority of the existing LSSs had not yet been modified to meet the needs of bus traffic, resulting in lost time.
To meet the traffic requirements, the VCDB was commissioned with the following tasks:

  • Equipping for radio communication and reprogramming at 36 LSSs
  • Modification of the program at 2 LSSs
  • Construction of 1 LSS

VCDB's Scope of Services

  • Updating the plan of the area, analysis of existing regulation
  • Development of appropriate measures to optimize the regulation of LSS
  • If necessary, planning related measures for the modernisation of LSSs (eg LED signal generators,  barrier-free constructions)
  • Preparation of construction, signs and markings plan
  • Compilation of the planning documentation for the release of necessary funds
  • Technical signalling calculations (interval times, signal program, phase sequence, regulation logic)
  • Compilation of technical traffic documentation and obtaining the official approval
  • Creation of a cable engineering plan
  • Development of technical specifications for the underground cable as well as technical equipment
  • Supporting the implementation of LSS measures (including adjustment of the local control and optimising the light signal regulation)
